DEVOTION 1978, oil on canvas, 36 x 48 in. ARTIST'S COMMENT This painting put me on the map as a very young artist. It was begun during my apprenticeship with Gage Taylor and completed in a college painting class with Gage's colleague, Bill Martin. It became my first image ever published (as a greeting card by Pomegranate Publications) and gained me entry to my first major exhibit, Vision Quest '78, where I showed my work alongside my idols of the art world. I was still only seventeen. It clearly shows the influences of both of my instructors as well as a little Maxfield Parrish and a hint of the romantic themes that would dominate my future work.
