DREAMFLIGHT

1987, oil on canvas, 30 x 60 in.

ARTIST'S COMMENT

The test of time has proven this to be one of my most popular images.

The original study for this was a simple sketch of a single winged figure, like my earlier painting, Angel in Blue. After a photo shoot, there were several images that I liked and so couldn't choose. I remembered the old adage, "When faced with a choice, do both!" In this case, it was more like five. I arranged the separate images collage-like into a composition that revealed itself to be a time-lapse sequence. It suggested an homage to Duchamp's Nude Descending the Staircase. I was very pleased with this development and tackled the technical challenge of making it work.

I remember thinking that I had really pushed my style into an exciting new direction with this painting, but now, twelve years later, I don't know if I have ever surpassed it.
