GILDING THE LILY 1994, oil on canvas, 30 x 40 in.
ARTIST'S COMMENT Appearances are deceiving. This is a wry satire about self-deception and unnecessary embellishment. The parrot and the chameleon are both creatures that have adapted by imitation. The gold paint, the rose-tinted glasses, and the mask all tell of our attempts to alter appearances of things that don't need it. |
