1983, Oil on board, 30 x 30 in.
I knew many people in the music business, so landed this coveted assignment to do an illustration for the Grateful Dead. I wasn't a deadhead, but had fun with the project. I even got a little help from one of their main artists, Alton Kelley, with the numbers.
This was the cover illustration for their 1994 calendar. The idea was to reinterpret some of the art that had been done for them in the past. Each of the four quadrants represents a season of the year and were also made into t-shirts for their tours at different times of the year. On rare occasions, I'll still see someone wearing one of the old t-shirts.
