THRESHOLD OF ETERNITY

1993, oil on board, 36 x 48 in.

ARTIST'S COMMENT

I have sometimes been accused being biased toward the female figure in my art. That's probably true. However, the original figure in this painting was a male acrobat who complemented the force and strength of the imposing edifice. Upon presenting it to my gallery I was strongly urged to change the figure to female. I agreed and completely repainted the entire central area now occupied by the female figure. I am satisfied with the results, but think that it would have also worked with the male figure.

The classical archway is also a strongly recurring theme in my art, especially with a figure traversing it. To me, it represents the transition of one state of being into another, such as physical into spiritual.

When this painting was reproduced as a limited edition print, the printer accidentally flipped the transparency, resulting in a mirror image proof. I said, "Now it's five minutes past midnight - too late!"
